She channels quaking fear, calm certainty, shameless mendacity, earnest longing, and bitter rage, sometimes all emanating from the same character, and she manages this extraordinary feat while keeping listeners rapt...
The audio is compelling and that is because Karissa Vacker makes it so. Her story-telling felt urgent, like I needed to keep listening or else. I loved listening to Daughter of Deep Silence and I feel like if I had read it, I wouldn’t have liked it nearly as much. Solid narrator!
The skills of author and narrator make a seamless transition into magical realism. Vacker’s volume rises in chilling bursts when Sarah returns home and confronts her father’s abuse and the cruelties that have taken place in school. Listeners will cheer for this resilient heroine and welcome the peace she finds at last.
Vacker’s portrayal of Lizzie evokes the best and worst of adolescence—burgeoning curiosity and confidence mixed with determination to comprehend rapidly changing surroundings. Choldenko’s characters constantly struggle against each other and societal pressures, and Vacker captures these dualities with compassion.
